This Day in History: 1827-01-16
Margaret West Norton is born in Hancock County, Maine. Margaret would marry John Barker Campbell in 1847. Margaret Campbell would become one of the most ardent advocates in the nation for women’s suffrage. She came to Colorado in 1875-1876 and had an impact on the forming of the Colorado Constitution. She came back the next year and traveled extensively on the first state-wide campaign for Women’s Suffrage. Her husband accompanied her and helped fund her campaign by selling paintings and possibly other labor. Her obituary claims, “Colorado ought to elect a monument to their memory.”
