This Day in History: 1876-03-12

Helen Laura Sumner (later married Robert M. Woodbury) was born on this date.  When she was five, she moved with her family to Durango, Colorado, where she lived for eight years until her family moved to Denver.  Dr. Sumner received her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1908 with a dissertation entitled, “The Labor Movement in America, 1827–1837.”  Sumner was the author of Equal suffrage : the results of an investigation in Colorado made for the Collegiate Equal Suffrage League of New York State.
